Hashcode Fibration was named for the kind of technology company we want to build: one that creates useful software products and takes responsibility for hosting and operating them.
The two parts of the name describe our technical roots and our intended operating model. “Hashcode” points to software engineering. “Fibration” offers an image of distinct products supported by a shared foundation.
Hashcode: our roots in software
“Hashcode” brings together ideas from computation, identifiers, and the structured representation of information in computer systems. We chose it to signal that software engineering and digital product creation sit at the centre of the company.
That engineering has a practical purpose. A useful product helps someone complete a task, understand a record, or make a decision. Its quality depends on how well it supports that work, including when something goes wrong.
Fibration: distinct products over a shared base
“Fibration” is borrowed from mathematics, including category theory. The image we draw from it is of many distinct “fibers” sitting over a common base.
For our company, each fiber represents a software product. A product may have its own domain, audience, and commercial model. It needs a clear purpose and must earn its place through the value it provides.
The shared base represents the technical and operational foundation behind those products: hosting, software infrastructure, deployment, analytics, security, and day-to-day operations.
This is the operating model we intend to develop as the company grows. It gives us a way to think about a portfolio while keeping each product’s purpose distinct.
Building includes operating
Launching a product begins an ongoing responsibility. Software needs maintenance, dependable deployment, attention to security, and a way to understand how it is working.
A common foundation can help us reuse sound engineering practices and carry operational lessons from one product to another. Each product still needs its own customer understanding, support, and commercial discipline. Shared infrastructure does not establish demand.
Our aim is to build that foundation around actual product needs, adding capabilities as the work justifies them.
Our starting point is PAP
Our immediate focus is PAP, our flagship payments platform, currently in development for African markets.
PAP addresses the work surrounding mobile money payments: keeping dependable records, understanding settlements, and investigating differences. It gives the company a concrete problem to work on and a focused starting point for the broader operating model.
We intend to validate the product in a limited number of initial markets before wider expansion. Related products and services should follow demonstrated needs and evidence from use. The portfolio is a longer-term direction; PAP is the current product focus.
What the name commits us to
Hashcode Fibration brings these ideas together: software engineering as our craft, useful products as our purpose, and a shared operational base as the way we intend to support them over time.
Each product should stand on the problem it solves. The company’s role is to give it the engineering and operational care needed to remain useful.
